Madaripur crash: BAU student Afsana dies on way to collect certificate

Twenty-six-year-old Afsana Mimi was on her way to collect her MSc certificate from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on Sunday morning.

However, in a tragic turn of events, Afsana met with a fatal fate in a road accident on the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway at Shibchar in Madaripur.

On Sunday morning, her mother Kaniz Fatema and younger sister Rukaiya Islam Rupa picked up Afsana in front of Bangabandhu College in Gopalganj city in Imad Paribahan bus.

She was supposed to go to BAU from Dhaka.

However, the bus lost control and fell down the expressway in Shibchar's Qutubpur area.

Afsana's father Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal was a Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) official. He died about 20 years ago when Afsana and Rupa were young. Since then, Kaniz took care of both the children herself.

Afsana Mimi completed her MSc from horticulture department of BAU. Afsana bought medicines for her mother on Saturday, the day before going to get the certificate. Afsana's mother wanted to see her daughter's body and cherish the memory of her daughter.

The death toll from an accident in the Kutubpur area in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur has risen to 19, with two people succumbing to their injuries while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Around 30 people were injured after a Dhaka-bound bus veered off the approach road to the Padma Bridge and crashed into a ditch on Sunday morning.
