Viqarunnisa teacher Murad arrested on charge of sexual harassment

Police have arrested Murad Hossain Sarkar, a teacher at Viqarunnisa Noon School and College in Bangladesh capital Dhaka, in a case of sexual harassment.

The Viqarunnisa teacher was arrested at the night following Monday after the school authorities had suspended Murad for harassing students sexually.

Murad was arrested at a location in Dhaka in a case filed under the Woman and Children Repression Prevention Act, Lalbagh Police Station duty officer said Tuesday morning.

‘Teacher Murad is now in our police station’s custody. He will be produced before a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court today,’ he said.

Murad was suspended and arrested after street protests by the school students and their guardians in the capital for days together.

Earlier, the primary investigation by a probe committee found proof of sexual harassment of some students by Murad, a mathematics teacher at the Azimpur branch of the institution.

Some guardians filed a complaint against the teacher at the Azimpur branch of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College on February 7.

According to the complaint, the teacher sexually harassed the students during private coaching.

Later, a committee was formed to probe the incident.

The teacher was withdrawn from the Azimpur branch on February 24 and attached to the principal’s office on the same day.

Murad Hossain, before his arrest, had claimed his innocence, saying that some teachers, out of jealousy, were conspiring against him using some students.

Porimol Joyodhor, a former Viqarunnisa Noon School and College teacher, is serving life-term in jail for raping a Class X student of the school in 2011.
