Bailey Road fire: Death toll climbs to 46

The death toll in the massive fire that broke out at the multistorey commercial building that housed several restaurants in Dhaka’s Bailey Road rose to 46.

Health Minister Dr Samanta Lal Sen confirmed the development on Friday morning.

Of the latest victims, one died while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) Friday morning.

The victim was identified as Jewel, 30. He died around 7am at the intensive care unit (ICU) of DMCH.

Till now, bodies of 39 people have been identified. Of them, at least 31 bodies of the victims have been handed over to families without autopsy.

Till now, identities of six bodies remain unknown. The authorities will hand them over after conducting DNA test.

Dhaka District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdur Rahman disclosed the information in front of DMCH on Friday morning.

Dhaka Additional Deputy Commissioner AKM Hedayetul Islam said: “The DMCH authorities are handing over the bodies. We are helping them. Apart from this, we have given assistance of Tk25 thousand to the deceased’s families who are not solvent.”
