Khaleda Zia’s shoulder frozen, unable to move hands

Dhaka, Oct 8 (Just News): BNP chief Begum Khaleda Zia is suffering from multiple medical conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes, says the head of her medical board Dr MA Jalil.

“As the rheumatoid arthritis, from which she has been suffering for the last 30 years, has not been kept under control, it has triggered a host of symptoms such as frozen shoulder,” he told the media at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital on Monday.

“She is suffering from extensive pain in her shoulder and hip-joints and both her knees, which had undergone replacement surgeries, have become swollen but we have managed to get it under control,” he added.

The doctor also said that Khaleda Zia is unable to move her hands and her left hand has bent due to arthritis.

“The treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is an ongoing process as the patients usually suffer from a wide variety of joint-pains,” the medicine specialist told the media while explaining her condition.

“We will begin her physiotherapy sessions very soon,” he added.

The former prime minister has also been suffering from high blood sugar, which she has been neglecting, according to BSMMU Professor Jalil. “She had been prescribed with insulin but she refused to take it.”

Khaleda Zia’s blood sugar will need to be monitored before further treatment as she had been diagnosed with hypoglycemia, fever and low sodium a few days ago, he said before adding: “She is also taking medication for blood pressure.”

Jalil was accompanied by the four other members of the medical board at the media call.

Khaleda Zia, who is serving a five-year term for her involvement in the Zia Orphanage Trust case has been admitted to BSMMU on Saturday (Oct 6) following a High Court order.
