Road crashes kill 8 in Cumilla

At least eight people including two women were killed in separate road accidents on Dhaka Chattogram highway in Cumilla today.

In Daudkandi, two people died and 20 others sustained injuries after a Cumilla-bound bus fell into a roadside ditch at Gouripur Bus stand around 2:30pm, said Abul Kalam Azad, officer in Charge of Daudkandi Highway Police.

A passerby was also killed as the bus ran over him while it was falling into the ditch, said the OC.

Two of the deceased were identified as Nurunessa, 32, of Dhakargaon of Daudkandi upazila, and Sagor, 28, of Kushiyara of Titas upazila.

The injured were taken to the upazila health complex, added the OC.

Besides, two people were killed as Dhaka-bound bus of Greenline Paribahan hit a covered van parked beside the highway at Eliotganj in the same upazila around 5:00am, said Monirul Islam, in-charge of Eliotganj Highway Police Outpost.

The deceased were identified as Fahad Al Razi Faisal of Cumilla, a supervisor of Greenline bus, and helper Anwar Hossain of Manikganj.

Bus supervisor succumbed to his injuries at Gouripur Upazilla health Complex and its helper died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, police said.

In Sadar upazila, a wrecker of “highway police” ran over a woman near Cumilla Cantonment around 2:00pm, leaving her dead on the spot, said Mahbubur Rahman, officer in Charge of Mainamoti Highway Police Station.

The victim was identified as Ansari Mondol, 30, wife of Sajib Mondol of Bikrampur in Munsiganj.

In Burichang upazila, two people were killed as a private car crashed into a roadside tree in Korpai area around 12:00pm, said Mahbubur Rahman, officer in Charge of Mainamati Highway Police Station.

The bodies of the deceased -- Humayun Kabir and Rahman -- were sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
