4 suspected drug traders killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfights’

Four suspected drug traders have been killed in alleged gunfights with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police in separate incidents in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf upazila.

The gunfights occurred in Hoyaikong and Sabrang areas on early Friday.

Two of the deceased were identified as Nazir Ahmed, son of Abdul Jalil of Chowdhurypara municipal in Teknaf and Gias Uddin, son of Md Zakaria. They were killed during a shootout with the police.

However, the identities of the other two drug traders, who died in a gunfight with BGB men, are yet to be disclosed.

Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das said: “While conducting a drive in Hoyaikong's Nayapara Battali area, a group of yaba traders opened fire on a police team, forcing police to fire back. Two men died on the spot in the ensuing gunfight."

Police also seized 6,000 pieces of yaba pills and two locally made weapons from the spot, he said.

“We are also trying to identify the other two men who died in a gunfight with BGB personnel. The four bodies will be sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy,” the OC added.

Meanwhile, Teknaf’s BGB 2 Captain Lt Col Asaduzzaman Chowdhury said: “A gunfight broke out when a team of BGB conducted a drive in Sabrang area to detain yaba traders, and the traders opened fire. Two yaba peddlers were killed in the gunfight.

“BGB men also seized one lakh pieces of yaba pills and one locally made weapon from the spot,” he added.
