Polls atmosphere warning signal for democracy: EC Mahabub

Election commissioner Mahbub Talukdar on Monday said the prevailing electoral atmosphere is a warning signal for democracy and underscored the need for reforming the overall electoral system.

Mahbub Talukdar made the observation in a written statement centring the second phase of the upazila parishad elections held amid a low turnout of voters.

He said reforms to the electoral process are needed for holding a meaningful election and continuation of the democracy. ‘But it is not the Election Commission’s job to reform the electoral process as it is the matter of political decision.’

The only vocal election commissioner against the electoral irregularities also said that the government formulates plan on how to hold the civic body elections.

Mahbub Talukdar also said that he hopes that all political parties will participate in the elections in future if it is held in a free, fair and credible manner and equal opportunities are ensured for all the participants.
