2 killed in ‘gunfights’ in Gazipur, Bogura

Two persons were killed in separate incidents of “gunfight” in Gazipur and Bogura early today.

In Gazipur, a suspected arms trader was killed in a reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in the city’s Salna area.

The deceased, aged around 35, could not be identified yet.

Acting on a tip-off that some traders were dealing arms at Salna, a team of the elite force conducted a drive there around 2:30am, said Rab-1 Company Commander Lt Commander Abdullah Al-Mamun.

Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the traders opened fire, prompting the Rab personnel to retaliate that triggered the “gunfight”.

After the “gunfight”, the Rab team found the body of a trader, lying on the spot, said Abdullah Al-Mamun.

Two Rab members -- Ujjal and Sanaullah -- sustained injuries.

One pistol was recovered from the spot.

In Bogura, an alleged criminal was killed in a “gunfight” with rivals in Upashahar area of Sadar upazila, quoting police.

The deceased was identified as Rafid Anam, 25.

On information that a “gunfight” between two groups of criminals was going on in the area, a police team went to the spot around 1:30am and found Rashid, critically injured, said Badiuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station.

He was rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 3:00am.

Rashid has seven cases lodged against him with different police stations including those of murder, extortion and arms dealing, said Sanatan Chakraborty, additional superintendent of police (Bogura Sadar Circle).
