Police withdraw checkpoints on Dhaka exit routes

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police withdraws its checkpoints on the exit routes of Dhaka on Friday in an apparent move to allow people to leave Dhaka during Eid holidays amid countrywide restriction on public movement to thwart coronavirus spread.

People will be allowed to travel to their destinations in ‘private vehicles’ during this Eid as the authorities have withdrawn major checkpoints at different entry-exit points in the capital, said a police officer on Friday.

The administration and police had earlier asked people not to leave Dhaka during Eid and police also barred people at checkpoints.

An additional deputy commissioner of Mirpur division police said that they had lifted checkpoints at Gabtali area after receiving an instruction from DMP high-ups on Thursday night.

Public transport services will remain closed and people travelling only on private vehicles will be allowed to leave Dhaka during this time, said additional inspector general of highway police Mallik Fakhrul Islam.

Earlier the cabinet division and the public administration ministry imposed rigorous restrictions on public movements before and after the Eid.
