COVID-19 deaths near 500, more 1,532 infected in Bangladesh

Twenty-eight more people died of COVID-19 and 1,532 others were infected with the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours ending 8:00am Sunday.

With the latest figures, the death toll from the COVID-19 hit 480 and the number of infections reached to 33,610, said Nasima Sultana, additional director general of Directorate General of Health Services, in the daily online bulletin on COVID-19 situation.

She said 8,908 samples were tested at 47 labs in the past 24 hours and 1,532 of them tested positive for COVID-19.

Bangladesh registered the first COVID-19 infections on March 8 and the first death from the disease on March 18.

Sunday was the 78th day and entered into 12th week of infections. The death of 28 people on Sunday was record for a single-day death in Bangladesh.

The infections and deaths increased manifold since the 10th week after the government on May 10 eased the lockdown, opening markets, malls and mills.

In the 11th week, ended Saturday, the number of infections hit 11,083 and the number of deaths also hit 138.

In the 10th week, the number of infections was 7,225 and 100 deaths.

In the eighth week, the number of infections was 3,792 and number of deaths was 35 while the infections in the ninth week were 4,980 and deaths were 39. Until April 30, the country’s COVID-19 cases were 7,667 with 168 deaths.

Nasima did not tell details about the new 28 deaths. On Sunday, 4,446 suspected patients were in isolation, she said.

Besides, 415 more COVID-19 patients were released from hospitals in the past 24 hours as they now showed no symptoms.

So far, 6,901 people were released from hospitals.

The country is going to celebrate an unusual Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday due to the coronavirus.

Nasima urged people to stay safe and follow healthy practice to keep coronavirus infections at bay.

She urged people to maintain three feet distance while attending Eid prayers and advised not to embrace and handshake, a ritual common for Muslims on Eid day.
