Obaidul sceptic about recurrent incidents of ferries hit Padma Bridge pillars

Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Friday said that an investigation was necessary to find out if there was any conspiracy behind the recurring incidents of ferries hitting the pillars of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge.

The minister said this during a visit at Padma Bridge project area at Mawa in Munshiganj.

Early in the morning, a ferry on Shimulia-Banglabazar channel hit the pillar number 10 of the bridge.

Obaidul also said that it would be a mistake to avoid the recurrent incidents of ferries hit the bridge pillars as trivial issues, mere accidents or inefficiency of masters.

On August 9, at least five people were injured and the same pillar was damaged when ferry Birshrestha Jahangir on the same channel crashed into the pillar.

Obaidul Quader said that many conspiracies were made against Padma Bridge from time to time.

He said that a meeting would be held with senior officials on the incidents on Friday evening.

On July 23, at least 20 people were injured when ro-ro ferry Hazrat Shahjalal travelling on the channel hit pillar number 17 of the Padma Bridge and before that on July 20 another ferry hit pillar no. 16 of the bridge.

About the progress of the construction work of the bridge Obaidul added that the physical progress of the bridge is 94.25 per cent, financial progress is 90.18 per cent and the overall progress of the bridge is 87.25 per cent so far.
