Ganatantra Mancha calls for countrywide sit-in protest on Jan 11

Ganatantra Mancha today declared a mass sit-in programme for January 11 in all divisional cities across the country demanding the release of Khaleda Zia and other political leaders and activists in jail.

Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu, convener of Bhashani Onusari Parishad, on behalf of Ganatantra Manacha, made the announcement during today's rally, reports our correspondent from the spot.

Today's protest rally by Ganatantra Mancha started from Jatiya Press Club around 12:10pm.

Several hundred leaders and activists of the seven parties that form the political alliance took part in the rally which ended around 12:40pm upon reaching Kakrail intersection.

The rally paraded through Paltan intersection on its way to Kakrail.

Earlier speaking at the rally, Junaid Saki, chief coordinator of Gana Sanghati Andolon, one of the seven parties of Ganatantra Mancha, said, "This government has started losing its ground after losing in Rangpur mayoral election. They even lost their security deposits."

He said, "We will lead this government to resign from power and will restore our voting rights."

The BNP and 32 other like-minded political parties are scheduled to take to the streets today as part of their simultaneous movement.

The parties are pressing home its 10-point demand that includes the resignation of the government, dissolution of parliament, transfer of power to a non-partisan caretaker government before the next national election, and formation of a new Election Commission.
