'See you soon,'says Trump

Concluding his speech, President Donald Trump says it has been the "greatest honour" to be president. Addressing supporters, he says he will "always fight for you" and will be "watching and listening" and pledges to be back in some capacity.

He also wishes the new administration "great success" for the future - but does not address Joe Biden or Kamala Harris by name.

Donald Trump has finished his brief speech at Andrews Air Base.

"We will be back in some form," he vows, before departing with Melania to the strains of YMCA.

The president is now reflecting on the coronavirus pandemic - which has dominated the last nine months of his presidency.

"We did something that is a medical miracle and that is the vaccine," he says.

He says the virus is a "horrible thing" and once again calls it the "China virus" but pays "great love" to families who have suffered greatly.

Considering these are his last remarks as president, Trump seems quite lively and positive here in his delivery - contrary to US media reports that he has been seething for days.

"We've left it all on the field," he says, to cheers from his supporters.

He's trying to rouse his followers and make it a moment of celebration rather than gloom.

"You are amazing," he tells them, to more applause.
