Govt served with notice to rescind Jessore Road tree felling

Dhaka, Jan 15 (Just News): A legal notice was sent on Monday to the government seeking cancellation of its decision of cutting century-old trees on the both sides of Benapole-Jessore Highway.

On behalf of a State University teacher Sheikh Md Mohibullah, a High Court lawyer Ishrat Hasan posted the notice seeking reply from secretary of Road and Highway Division, Deputy Director of the Department of Environment, Deputy Commissioner of Khulna and Police Superintendent of Jessore within seven days.

Ishrat Hasan said "According to section 18 (A) of the Constitution, the government will preserve and enhance the nature for present and future generations and trees secures the eco-balance of nature. So the decision of cutting age-old trees goes against the Constitution."

Last year on March 21, Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) approved a project for widening Benapole-Jessore Highway while the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) in Jessore has decided to cut down around 2,700 trees, for this purpose.
