Arrest warrant issued against journalist Shafik Rehman

Dhaka, Mar 6 (Just News): A Dhaka court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant against journalist Shafik Rehman and three others in a case filed for an alleged attempt to murder prime minister Sheikh Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy outside the country.

Weekly magazine Mouchake Dheel editor and formerly editor of daily and weekly Jai Jai Din Shafik Rehman is widely known as a pro-BNP intellectual. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is the country’s main opposition political party.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sorfuzzaman Ansary issued the arrest warrant after accepting the charge sheet filed earlier on 20 February by the Detective Branch of police against five accused in the attempt-to-murder case.

Court police’s registration officer Jalal Hossain confirmed this. He said that Shafik Rehman is on bail in this case, but three other accused have remained at large from the very beginning of the trail.

He said Shafik Rehman was not present in the court today, Tuesday, and the court issued the arrest warrant after accepting the charge sheet.

The other accused in the case is now-closed daily Amar Desh’s acting editor Mahmudur Rahman. He was present at the court.

The three other accused are pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (Jasas) vice president Mohammad Ullah Mamun, his son Rizvi Ahmed alias Caesar and Bangladeshi expatriate in USA Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan.
