Hefazat leader Shahinur Pasha held in Sylhet

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has detained Hefazat-e-Islam leader Advocate Maulana Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury in Sylhet city.

A special team of CID from Dhaka apprehended Shahinur at Subidbazar Bankalapara Abbasia Jame Masjid in the early hours of Friday.

Airport police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khan Md Moinul Zakir confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune, but declined to disclose any details about the charges brought for the arrest.

A former lawmaker from Sunamganj 3 constituency (Jagannathpur and South Sunamganj), Shahinur was the legal affairs secretary of now defunct Hefazat's central committee.

Besides, he is also the vice president of Jamiat-e Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh.

In 2005, Shahinur was elected MP in the Sunamganj 3 by-election after the death of Awami League leader and former foreign minister Abdus Samad Azad.

He, however, contested the general elections in 2008 and 2018 as a candidate of four-party alliance and Jatiya Oikyafront respectively, but lost both the elections.
