DGHS chief: 90% of hospitalized Covid patients are from village

More than 90% of the coronavirus patients admitted to major hospitals in districts outside Dhaka are from villages, says health directorate chief ABM Khurshid Alam.

He was speaking as the special guest at the inaugural function of the annual conference of the Public Health Association of Bangladesh on Friday.

The DGHS director general said he has arrived at the number following his recent visits to hospitals in several districts outside Dhaka.

Many villagers are unaware of the fact that each upazila health complex has 10 beds including oxygen supply for Covid-19 patients, which is why they flock to big hospitals in the cities, Dr Khurshid remarked.

Covid-19 has so far claimed 26,362 lives and infected 1,507,116 people in Bangladesh.

The health authorities have administered the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine to around 18.67 million people in the country to date. Of them, some 8.2 million have received both doses.
