Court sentences health dept driver Malek to 30-year jail

A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced Abdul Malek, 63, a driver of the health department, to 30-year imprisonment under two sections in a case filed against him in connection with the seizure of arms and ammunition.

Judge Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Special Tribunal-4 on Monday announced the verdict in the case.

Earlier, on September 13, the defecne completed arguments and set Monday for pronouncing the verdict. On

September 9 the accused demand himself innocent and demand justice.

The court framed charge against him on March 11. The investigation officer of the case, Rapid Action Battalion subinspector pressed charges against him on January 11.

The RAB arrested Abdul Malek, alias Driver Malek, from Turag area of the capital on the morning of September 20 last year on charges of being involved in various illegal activities.

A foreign pistol, five rounds, 1.5 lakh Bangladeshi counterfeit notes, a laptop and a mobile phone were recovered from him.
