20 injured in police-Chhatra Dal clash in Dhaka

At least 20 people were injured in a clash between the police and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in front of Bangladesh Nationalist Party central office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka on Sunday evening.

Police detained at least 15 Chhatra Dal activists and kept the party office cordoned until 9:00pm when the report was being filed.

Many activists of the opposition political party became stranded in the party office after the clash.

Chhatra Dal central committee vice-present Omar Faruk Kaiser said that the police foiled their meeting in Mirpur on Sunday afternoon and detained 20 to 30 activists there.

Different units of Chhatra Dal staged rally in the evening protesting at the detention and tried to bring out a procession.

‘Police barred our procession and attacked on our activists,’ said the JCD leader.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the protestors as Chhatra Dal activists replied with hurling brickbats.

Omar Faruk said that at least 20 activists were injured in police attack and many had to undergo treatment at hospitals.

DMP Motijheel zone additional deputy commissioner Enamul Haque Mithu claimed that Chhatra Dal activists attacked police without any provocations.

He said that Chhatra Dal activists tried to bring out a procession near their party office and police asked them not to bring out the procession.

The Chhatra Dal activists then started attacking the police and hurling brickbats leaving some policemen injured.

Paltan police station sub-inspector Rejaul Karim Khan was severely injured in the attack and needed six stitches in his head, said ADC Enamul.

Police detained at least 15 people and a case will be filed over the incident, he said.

Chhatra Dal activists alleged that police cordoned off the party office after the clash.

Police officials said that they were staying there to avert any further violence.
