Five dead as Dhaka BRT project girder falls on car

 

 

A total of five people were killed and two others injured as a girder of the Bus Rapid Transit Line 3 project collapsed on a private car at Uttara in Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Monday.

Four of the deceased are diver Rubel, 50, and passengers - Jarna, 28, Zakara, 6, and Jannat, 2.

The injured ones who are now undergoing treatment at Uttara Crescent Hospital are Hridoy, 26, and Riya Moni, 21.

Uttara Paschim Police Station inspector (Operations) Partha Pratim said that they rescued two injured ones from the car while bodies of five more people were recovered after removing the girder from the car in the evening.

Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Company Limited managing director Safiqul Islam told New Age that the accident took place at about 4:30pm.

The private car was going to Ashulia from Kawla in Dhaka city, police said.

Two firefighting units from Uttara Fire Station are at the spot conducting rescue operations, said Dewan Azad, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Currently, DBRTCL, along with the Roads and Highways Department, Bangladesh Bridge Authority and the Local Government Engineering Department, is implementing the 20.2-kilometre north section of the Greater Dhaka Sustainable Urban Transport Project on the Gazipur-Airport route at the cost of Tk 20,398.5 million.

Earlier, six workers, including three Chinese nationals, were injured as a launching girder and a pier cap of the project collapsed in separate areas of the capital on March 14.

On March 13, 2017, a worker was killed and two others, including a Local Government Engineering Department engineer, were maimed as a girder of Moghbazar-Mouchak Flyover collapsed on rail track in Malibagh level crossing area in Dhaka.
