2 killed in Kushtia, Barishal ‘gunfights’

A suspected drug trader and an alleged robber were killed in separate gunfights with police in Kushtia and Barishal districts early today.

Emdad Khunkar, 35, a suspected drug peddler and a resident of Ranjitpur in Kushtia Sadar Upazila, was killed in a “reported” gunfight with the law enforcers at Adabaria village in Kumarkhali upazila of the district.

AKM Mizanur Rahman, officer-In-charge (OC) of Kumarkhali Police Station, said a police team raided Chechua beel on information that a gang of drug peddlers was holding a clandestine meeting there around 3:30am.

“The drug traders opened fire on police sensing the presence of police,” the OC said adding that the “gunfight” ensued when police retaliate with bullets.

When the criminals managed to flee the scene, police found the body of Emdad from the spot, our Kushtia correspondent reports quoting the OC.

Police also recovered a pistol, four bullets and 100 pieces of yaba from the spot.

According to the OC, Emdad was accused in two drug cases filed with Islamic University Police Station.

In Barishal, an alleged robber Mamun Sarder, 27, of Khunna area in Hijla upazila, was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Kazirhat area of Mehendiganj upazila around 2:00am, UNB adds.

Abdul Khalek (PPM), OC (investigation) of Kazirhat Police Station, said that police arrested one Russell in a case filed in connection with a robbery at the house of Panna Mir on February 5.

During interrogation, Russell told the law enforcers that the robbery was planned by Mamun.Based on this information, police arrested Mamun from Muladi bridge area around 8:00pm on Monday.

Later, a team of law enforcers along with Mamun went to the spot to recover the valuables looted from the house of Panna Mir.

Sensing presence of police, Mamun's associates opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, triggering the “gunfight” which left Mamun bullet injured, the OC said.

Later, the injured was taken to Muladi Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Saiful Islam, superintendent of Barishal police, said that Mamun was accused in several cases including that of robbery.

A one shooter gun, a pipegun, bullets, two machetes and several masks were recovered from the spot.
