Three suspected human traffickers have been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The incident occurred at the Maheshkhalia para boat terminal in the upazila around 4am on Tuesday.
The deceased are Qurban Ali, 30, Abdul Kader, 25, and Abdur Rahman, 30; they were reportedly involved in trafficking Rohingya refugees to Malaysia, from Bangladesh.
Police say three of their officials Sub-Inspector Sayef, Constable Mong and Constable Md Shukkur were also injured in the incident. They have been taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Teknaf police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das said: “Based on a tip-off, we conducted a drive in the area to apprehend 15 human traffickers who were accused in cases filed for trafficking Rohingya refugees.
“However, when we reached the spot, the human traffickers who were already at the crime scene opened fire at us, forcing us to strike back. At one point during the shooting, most of them escaped."
He further said police found three injured bodies on the spot and sent them to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead on arrival.
The law enforcement also found three firearms, 15 cartridges, and 20 cartridge casings from the spot.
A case will be lodged with Teknaf police station in this regard, the OC added.
