3 children die in landslide, heavy rain in Cox’s Bazar

Three children died and 18 other people were injured in landslides and by drowning due to heavy downpour in Teknaf and Ramu upazilas of Cox’s Bazar this morning.

The deceased were identified as Mehedi Hasan, 8, son of Robiul Alam Munna, and Alifa, 5, daughter of Mohammad Alam of Teknaf municipality, our Cox’s Bazar correspondent reports quoting police and locals.

A chunk of earth from a rain-soaked hill fell on the houses of the two families living at the foot of the hill at Pollanpara around 6:00am leaving Mehedi and Alifa dead on the spot, the correspondent reports quoting Pradib Kumar Dash, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station.

Twelve members of both the families were also injured in the incident.

Besides, another child, Md Khairul, 13, from the same area drowned due to the heavy rainfall, the OC said.

People living at the base of the hill are at risk as it had been raining since yesterday which could trigger further landslides, the OC added.

Meanwhile, six people were injured in another incident of landslide on Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf Marine Drive in Himchari area around 4:10pm.

The injured were rescued by Bangladesh Army's 16 Engineer Construction Battalion (ECB) and were rushed to Cox’s Bazar District Health Complex, our correspondent reports quoting sources.

Besides, houses of three families were damaged after chunk of earth fell on them in Shalban Rohingya camp due to heavy rainfall this morning, said local people. No casualties have been reported in this incident so far.
