Students attempt to move in VC’s residence

A section of Dhaka University students today attempted to move into the vice chancellor’s residence as per their earlier decision to move into the VC’s house if the authorities fail to solve the accommodation crisis by mid October.

But they were barred at the entrance by a proctorial team, reports our DU correspondent.

On October 1, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) member Tanbir Hasan Shaikat issued a 15-day ultimatum to the university administration to resolve the accommodation crisis on campus.

Tanbir, a former member of Chhatra League’s central unit, also threatened to move in the VC’s residence if the authority fails to take any effective measure by this time.

Today, around 20 students, residents of Kabi Jashimuddin Hall’s “Gono Room” (mass room), led by Tanbir went to the VC’s residence to move in there.

But as they were stopped by a proctorial team at the entrance, they took position in front of the VC’s residence around 11:00am, reports our DU correspondent.

The proctorial team told the students that the VC was not present at his residence and asked them to come after he returns.

Tanbir alleged that the university administration is not sincere to solve the problem. “If the authorities were really sincere, they would have evicted the illegal occupants from the halls and then we would not have to be here,” Tanbir added.

On October 1, Tanbir issued the ultimatum at a student rally held at the base of Raju Memorial Sculpture.
