Dr Yunus secures bail in 5 cases

Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus has secured anticipatory bail in five cases filed against him.

Dhaka Labour Court 3 acting Chairman Zakia Parveen granted the bail to Yunus after he surrendered at her court on Sunday.

In three of the cases, an arrest warrant was issued against him.

Yunus’s lawyer Barrister Mahmud Jabbar Khan appealed to the court to allow Yunus to provide attendance through him [Mahmud], which the court accepted.

However, the court also ordered Yunus to be present on the day when the charge sheet would be submitted against him.

On October 28, the High Court ordered Yunus to surrender before it within November 7, in a case filed over the illegal sacking of employees in Grameen Communications.

The court also asked the concerned authorities not to arrest or harass him before this time.

The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman passed the order.

On October 9, a labour court issued an arrest warrant against Dr Yunus in a case filed over the illegal sacking of three employees of Grameen Communications.

The three employees of Grameen Communications filed three separate cases against its Chairman Dr Yunus, Managing Director Naznin Sultana, and Deputy General Manager Khandaker Abu Abedin.

In the cases, they accused the trio of sacking them illegally for their role in the formation of a trade union at their workplace.

The accused were asked to appear before the court on October 8.

Meanwhile, the court granted bail to Naznin and Abedin when they appeared before it and sought bail.

Grameen Communications, however, does not have any link with Grameen Bank.
