BNP on Wednesday alleged that the government is not sending relief materials to flood-affected areas as it is reluctant about people’s sufferings.
"Severe floods are inundating villages after villages. People’s houses and cropland in char areas of Padma and Jamuna rivers have gone under floodwaters while many cows and goats washed away,” said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Speaking at a human-chain programme, he said, “Where’s the government assistance? Government relief didn’t reach the affected people in chars of the Padma Jamuna.”
The BNP leader also alleged that the ruling party leaders are embezzling the money allocated for the helpless and destitute people.
He urged the leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies, and the rich to stand by the flood victims and ease their sufferings.
Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal arranged the human-chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club, demanding the government reopen state-owned jute mills and ensure wages and festival bonus for the workers before Eid-ul-Azha.
Rizvi criticized the government for what he said shutting down the state-owned jute mills at this time of corona pandemic.
He called upon the government to back off from its decision of closing the jute mills considering the plight of workers.
The BNP leader also urged the government to take proper steps so that the workers are provided with their wages and festival bonus before the eid.
He slammed the government for its failure to resolve the waterlogging problem in the capital, though huge public money has been spent in this regard. “Even after light rains, vehicles can't move in Dhaka city as most roads go under rainwater. People are living in terrible miseries in the city!”
