Like BAKSAL didn’t, this EC law too won’t protect Awami League: BNP

Saying that the formation of Election Commission bill will not protect the ruling Awami league, BNP today said that this law will not be acceptable to the people of the country.

"Back in the day, Awami League formed BAKSAL to save themselves and the same way they passed the Election Commission (formation) law. They thought it will save them but they forgot that BAKSAL did not save them. They will not be safe even after enacting the Election Commission law," BNP's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said.

Addressing a discussion at Jatiya Press Club, entitled "BAKSAL: Dark day of killing democracy", the BNP leader raised questions about the motive of the law formed within a very short time.

He said the draft law was passed in the Cabinet on January 17 and then it was placed in the parliament on January 23.

"Parliamentary standing committee was given a week to bring any change, if there is any, and then to bring it in the parliament. But within 24 hours, they brought the law in the parliament and passed it," he said.

Claiming that the parliament does not have any right to pass this law, Fakhrul said, "This parliament is not elected by the people. So, this law is not acceptable to us and to the people of the country."

Reiterating that the BNP will not take part in any election under the Hasina-led government, Fakhrul said, "We don't want to enter another BAKSAL-like era."
