30 injured in police-BNP clash in Savar

Thirty leaders and activists of BNP were injured today as police charged batons on a procession on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar protesting uncontrolled price of commodities.

The procession was organised by the party's Dhaka district unit demanding release of its Chairperson Khaleda Zia and protesting corruption of the government and Awami League politicians, our Savar correspondent reports.

Two police personnel sustained injuries including an ASI of Savar Police Station during an attack carried out by BNP, police claimed.

Before the procession, they also held a rally at the residence of BNP's Dhaka district unit President Dewan Mohammad Salauddin around 11:00am. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was present at the rally.

However, BNP did not give an official statement over the incident.

When contacted, the district unit's Assistant Joint General Secretary Shariful Alam said police suddenly charged batons on the procession, leaving 30 BNP leaders and activists injured.

Of them, Savar municipal unit convener Khandaker Shah Mainul Hossain Biltu, Ashulia thana unit leader Jahangir Alam sustained serious injuries. Both of them were admitted to a local hospital for treatment, he said.

Kazi Moinul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station, said the BNP men organized the protest on the highway without police permission. Since police barred them they (BNP men) hurled brick chips and attacked on police, leaving two of the policemen including an ASI injured.

Police took the action only for self-defence, said the OC.

Three BNP men have been detained over the attack. A case will be filled in this connection, he added.
