25 injured as Jubo League-BNP men clash in Patuakhali

At least 25 people, including a member of police, were injured in clashes between the supporters of Jubo League and BNP in Dumki upazila of Patukhali this morning.

The clashes took place in front of the BNP office in the upazila around 11am, reports our Patuakhali correspondent.

Injured police officer Delwar Hosen was being treated at Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, said Abdus Salam, officer-in-charge of Dumki Police Station.

Eight of the injured were admitted to Dumki Upazila Health Complex, he added.

According to eyewitnesses, hundreds of leaders and activists of BNP gathered this morning in front of the party office to take part in a rally protesting the rising prices of commodities.

At the same time, a procession of Jubo League was passing through the area when the clashes ensued.

The supporters and activists of the two group took part in chase-counter chase and they threw brick chips at each other, the witnesses said.

Upon receiving the information, police reached to the spot and brought the situation under control.

BNP Dumki upazila convener Khalilur Rahman claimed that at least 50 leaders and activists of his party were injured during the vandalism of their party office by the Jubo League men who attacked BNP's peaceful programme.

Denying the allegations, upazila Jubo League general secretary Sirajul Islam Tuhin said BNP men attacked Jubo League processions that was being held in protest against "anarchy created by Jamaat-BNP".

OC Abdus Salam said that situation was now under control. Additional police have been deployed at important places in the city, he added.
