"Attack on BNP rally": State Minister Kamal Majumder, 19 others sued

Awami League leader and State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder and 19 others were sued today for allegedly attacking a peaceful procession brought out by BNP leaders and activists in Dhaka's Mirpur area on September 15, which left at least 20 people injured.

AL lawmaker from Dhaka-16 Constituency Elias Uddin Mollah and General Secretary of Jubo League Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, are among the other accused in the case.

Advocate Omar Faruque Faruqi, general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum at Dhaka Bar Association, filed the case with the court of Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Tofazzal Hossain.

After the hearing, the magistrate recorded statement of the complainant and will pass an order later in the day.

In the complaint, the complainant said BNP on September 10 announced it would hold rallies at 16 places in Dhaka on September 15 to protest the price hike of essentials and fuel, and the death of its activists during the recent protests in Bhola and Narayanganj.

In line with the party's decision, BNP's Dhaka North City unit was preparing to hold a rally around 1:30pm on that day on Mukul Fouz Field in Mirpur 6.

But before the rally started, AL leaders and activists being instructed by the state minister and other leaders took out a procession around the venue and tried to chase away the protesters, who retaliated with throwing brick chips, said witnesses.

The state minister and many other leaders were present on the spot when the incident occurred.

The ruling party men also vandalised the stage, motorcycles and nearby shops.

The accused violated the female leaders and activists of BNP, the complainant further added.
