Govt not allowing anyone to meet Khaldea Zia, says BNP

Dhaka, July 11 (Just News): Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Wednesday alleged that the relatives of jailed chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and the party leaders are not getting the permission to meet her since the last 11 days.

Speaking at a press conference at its central office, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also alleged that the jail authorities were not paying any heed to their demand, arguing that the jail code does not permits so.

Terming the incident as a violation of human rights, Fakhrul said, “Even though the jail super has the authority to give the permission according to the jail code, several attempts from the family members and party men had been turned down. The jail super asks us to go to the IG prisons and then he sends us to the minister. The minister then asks us to go to the number one person (prime minister).”

"Is it the rule of law if the prime minister’s permission is required to meet Khaleda," he asked.

He also alleged that the government wanted to cling to power by conducting a one-sided national election keeping Khaleda Zia behind the bars.

Terming the cases against Khaldea Zia ‘false’, he said the BNP chairperson had got bail in the main case only to be later denied a bail in another case so that she could be kept in jail for a long time.

Fakhrul warned the government of mass protest if Khaleda Zia was not freed. He urged them to hold an election under a neutral government dissolving the parliament.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, assistant organising secretary Abdus Salam Azad, Swechchhasebak Dal's general secretary Mir Sharafat Ali Sapu were also present at the press conference.
