BNP brings back 12 ‘reformists’

Dhaka, Oct 25 (Just News): Several ‘reformist’ BNP leaders, who had left the party during the emergency regime of military-backed caretaker administration, have joined the party once again.

The twelve leaders, including a former minister, met with Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at the party chief Khaleda’s Gulshan offices on Thursday, says a statement sent to the media.

Among those, who have rejoined, include former state minister for housing Alamgir Kabir from Naogaon, former whip Abu Yousuf Md Khalilur Rahman of Joypurhat. The two had joined the Oli Ahmed-led LDP, but are politically inactive for quite some time.
The meeting was also attended by Rajshahi’s Abu Hena, Barishal’s Jahiruddin Swapan, HM Siraj and Ziaul Haque Molla from Bogura, Narsingdi’s Sardar Shakhawat Hossain Bakul, Ataur Rahman Angur from Narayanganj, Sunamganj’s Nazir Hossain, Jhalkatthi’s Elen Bhutto and Patukhali’s Shahidul Alam Talukder.

Shamim Kaiser Linkon of Gaibandha attended the meeting over telephone.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Bakul said, “We have been with the party. We have been instructed to be more active. The secretary general has informed us about acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s instruction.”
Patukhali’s Shahidul Alam Talukder echoed.

“The party’s chairperson is in jail while the acting chief is abroad and the elections are looming. We will release the party chief through a movement as well as prepare for the polls,” he said.

According to the statement sent to the media, the meeting discussed the current political crisis as well as party chief’s release and politically motivated charges against acting chief.

Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul urged the leaders to strengthen the party in the movement to restore democracy, it said.
