People doubtful over polls: BNP

Dhaka, Nov 30 (Just News): People of the country are doubtful over the upcoming election as sprees of arrests of BNP’s leaders and activists continue, says Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

“Arrest and attack continue. How the election is possible amid such situations. A question has risen among people whether the polls will be held,” he told a media briefing at BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan offices on Friday.

Mirza Fakhrul said, “On the day when the House passed the 15th constitutional amendment Begum Khaleda Zia warned that it would lead the country to fresh chaos and now the nation is on the brink of chaos.”

On Jul 3, 2011, the 15th Amendment abolished the provision of holding parliamentary elections under a non-party caretaker administration.

Demanding arrest, attack and lawsuit must be stopped, Mirza Fakhrul said, “We can’t understand what will happen to the election in this circumstance.”

The senior BNP leader made it clear that the government and the Election Commission (EC) will be held responsible if any unexpected political turmoil arises.

“Stop arresting party supporters in ‘fictitious cases’ and release the detained,” Mirza Fakhrul demanded.

He also blamed the government for turning the judiciary into a tool to implement its agenda. “Especially, the lower court carries out more government orders. It must be stopped immediately.”

“The High Court is also delivers some orders, which are never useful to the election,” Mirza Fakhkrul said.

The BNP leader s claimed the EC is yet to create a level playing field. “Arrest has been continued since the announcement of polls schedule.”

Referring to Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader’s remark on BNP possible pulling out from the polls, Mirza Fakhkrul categorically assured his party would take part in the Dec 30 election.

On Jamaat-e-Islami’s contenders contesting on BNP’s electoral symbol ‘paddy sheaf’, he said, “No contender is from Jamaat here. All are BNP’s.”

“We’ve shared five constituencies with the tops leaders of (20-party) Alliance and (Jatiya) Oikya Front,” Mirza Fakhrul informed.
