15 hurt in Chhatra League attacks on Afroza’s campaign

Dhaka, Dec 12 (Just News): BNP candidate for Dhaka 9 seat Afroza Abbas has come under attack twice by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in Dhaka’s Kamalapur and Madartek areas.

At least 15 supporters of the BNP candidate were injured in the attacks that occurred on Wednesday morning, said BNP chairperson’s press wing member Shamsuddin Didar.

He said Chhatra League men, who are supporters of Awami League leader Saber Hossain Chowdhury, carried out the first attack in Kamalapur, injuring 10 women.

Didar said sometime later, Chhatra League men also hurled brickbats at the BNP candidate’s motorcade in Madartek area, leaving at least five women wounded.

The Chhatra League men were led by local Awami League leader Chittaranjan Das and Chhatra League leader Shahriar, said her media coordinator Nahid Nazrul.

The attackers damaged a vehicle of Afroza and assaulted her driver Abdur Rashid.

However, BNP leader Mirza Abbas’s wife Afroza-- who is contesting for Dhaka 9 constituency in the upcoming 11th general election slated for December 30—did not sustain injuries in the attacks.

Meanwhile, Mirza Abbas, husband of Afroza and BNP's candidate for Dhaka 8 constituency, warned that he has the strength to put up resistance against any attack on him.

Talking to reporters while campaigning in Motijheel area, he said, “I have heard around 100 Awami League cadres with sticks are waiting for me to be at Paribagh. I would like to tell BNP activists that I have the strength to resist any such attack.”

Abbas said his wife's election campaign came under repeated attacks since morning. “She did not engage in fight. I also do not want to lock into any clash as we are on the campaign trail to woo and inspire voters.”

The BNP leader also said police are not taking any step to resist the attackers, only playing the role of silent spectators.
