BNP skips oath ceremony

No opposition BNP or Jatiya Oikyafront elects were seen in the oath room as swearing in ceremony for 298 lawmakers, elected through the government controlled 11th parliamentary election, has been held at the Parliament Secretariat.

The programme began around 11am in the Oath Room of the Parliament Complex, after Awami League President and also Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, and Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, arrived at the parliament building.

Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury delivered the opening speech at the ceremony.

As per the parliamentary practice, lawmakers of the winning side – in this case, the Awami League – took their oaths. Later, the Jatiya Party (JaPa) MPs-elect were also sworn in around 12:22pm.

A BNP party leader said: “A meeting will be held to decide the next course of action for the MPs-elect, as they did not attend the oath taking ceremony held on Thursday.”
